The beggining of part 2 reveals alot about Mary-Lou, Ed and Dean. The places they have been to over the past year has done nothing for them or their lives. When Sal says "the bug was on me again" I think that he knew he had to leave because he was getting too comfortable being home with his family. He knew that if he stayed he wouldent find what he is looking for in his life, so he decided to go back on the road with Dean again. In chapter five, Sal went home to his aunt who disagrees with the fact Sal is hanging around with Dean and his gang. When Sal said, "I knew that was wrong, too." Did Sal think he was wrong for hanging out with Dean and his friends or his aunt being wrong for saying that?
