Portrayal of Women
I know we lightly touched upon the subject of women in On the Road in class, but as I've been reading it's just frustrating me more and more. It's so aggravating how women are literally objects to them. They're either used in pleasure, or to get what it is they want, which seems to be the same thing a lot of the time. Eventually they toss them away like they are meaningless, and it's horrible! Yes, I know that Dean and Sal are two very horny guys, but it's so disturbing how they can refer to women simply as sex objects! Sure there are some female characters like Teri or Mary Lou who seem to be a bit more important than the others, but they both simply get used at a point and they're both described very sexually. It's not that women should be asexual, but they shouldn't only be sexual. All the static characters that they meet are men with very distinct personalities. The women all tend to be the same thing and I just am very disgusted. Okay, sorry for my little rant, but I had to say it.
