Second Thoughts (Nick stole my Idea for a good title)

The book so far is a very easy read. However, there are alot of people introduced and is kind of confusing. On page 41 when kerouac wrote "the following ten days were as W.C. Fields said "fought with eminent peril." Who is W.C. Fields?
